How To: Add A Photo
xtra xtra has a special section for each community that’s devoted to local photos. This is the place for images from the local holiday parade, the elementary school pageant, and picturesque snapshots you took in the park one afternoon. It’s where you can share out-and-about photos from a fundraiser or pictures of your favorite pet. In short, it’s where you can show others what your community is all about.
xtra xtra images are filterable by category, so you can upload as many pictures as you like and still have a simple time finding what you’re looking for. We’ve made it easy to share pictures, too, with a five-step posting process that takes less than a minute or two to complete. Click here to find the steps outlined in black and white (and color!)…
Let us know if you have any questions, and if you post an image, share the link in the comments. We love seeing your creative pictures!
Till next time,

Do You Know Where Your Passwords Are?
We’re very concerned about safety. We lock our houses, install alarm systems, and create “c0mp1ic8ed” passwords for our computers. We tell our kids not to talk to strangers, and we get mad when our cars don’t work properly. We do a lot of things to ensure our safety, but it’s surprising how vulnerable we allow ourselves to become online.
Consider the following list of risky or unsafe online actions. How safe are you online?
- Giving Away Your Location—Social media tools like Twitter and Foursquare have created a surge in microblogging, and many people are tweeting whenever they walk
out the door. Tweets like “I’m at Logan Airport” reveal where you are, but as the folks at PleaseRobMe.com point out, they also reveal that your house is empty. Be conscious of what you toss out into cyberspace, because it might come back to bite you (or, in this case, steal your home entertainment system).
- Password Pass/Fail—How often do you change your passwords? Do you use the same one at different sites? Do you store that information on your computer so you can log in without keying in a password? Your answers to these questions can make or break your internet safety. Last year, over 10,000 Hotmail passwords were stolen, jeopardizing users’ content and web security. You should vary your passwords, and keep them in your memory or on a hidden sheet of paper rather than saved to your browser. Google created a great guide to making smart passwords, so take a look and update your accounts. After all, it’s also a good idea to change your password from time to time to prevent hacking, phishing, or spam.
- Sharing the Names of Children—People are sharing more photos on sites like Flickr, YouTube, Facebook, and so forth, and it’s impossible to keep track of who is seeing what. If you post a picture of your child, be sure not to use his or her full name unless you can be sure of who will see the photo. It’s a good rule of thumb to post only first names or initials when sharing pictures of youngsters on our site, and always ask for the parents’ permission if you’re sharing a picture with other kids in it (i.e. a great picture from a birthday party).
- My Email Address Is….—This one might not be “unsafe,” but it certainly attracts unwanted email. Posting your full email address in blogs or on websites makes you vulnerable to phishers and spammers. To avoid unwanted mail, spell out your email address. For example, Joyce23@gmail.com should be “Joyce23-at-gmail-dot-com.” A person can put two and two together and still reach you; unable to recognize it as an email address, a robot or spammer will leave you alone.
- Giving Away Your Information–Before you give a website anything–whether it’s money, your name, your email address, or your date of birth–do some research and make sure it’s a legitimate website. Some sites make a profit by selling your contact information to a third party source, so spend some time reading a webpage’s Terms of Use page or Privacy Policy. Many sites, including xtra xtra, are also certified for internet safety by outside parties, so look for logos from companies like TRUSTe when you’re evaluating a site.
Web safety is a big concern as more and more of our daily lives move to the internet. When your family, your bank account, and your identity are on the line, you have to be careful. What about you, xtra xtra fans? What tools and strategies do you have for staying safe online? Share in the comments below!

We’re Engaged! …Now What?
We’re in the wake of the sugar-rush that was Valentine’s Day. The chocolates have been eaten, and the roses are in their vases. Many couples are also facing a big change, for Valentine’s Day is a popular occasion for wedding proposals. It’s an exciting time, but in the days after cupid’s folly, many couples are likely wondering what happens next.
The answer is simple: You tell the world that you’re engaged!
The method, however, is not so simple. There are many ways to celebrate the wedding to come, but they have their flaws. Read below to find pros and cons of different tools, and we’ll also tell you how you can announce your engagement for free on xtraxtra.com.

The Olympics and Local Sports: Earning Gold Matters to Your Community
The Olympics represent many things to many people. Some watch to see who will win the most medals, and others tune in because they like the traditions and camaraderie of the games. For many athletes, however, the Olympics are an opportunity to represent their countries as they reach for gold.
Aminata Diouf, a Senegalese athlete who competed in Beijing in 2004, said, “I feel like an ambassador, who is very proud. It is this motivation that makes you want to train at two hundred percent of your abilities. The goal is to satisfy an entire nation.”
Diouf’s sentiments are not unique. National pride is a big motivator at the Olympics; it’s evident in the comments from breathless champions, the flags that drape each event, and the lavish opening ceremonies created by the hosting city. This year’s Olympics in Vancouver, for example, began with an elaborate performance on Canada’s history and traditions.
Fans and fellow countrymen join Diouf in seeing their athletes as representatives of the homeland. We cheer for “Team USA” and all the athletes who wear the colors of our favorite countries, and in a way, sports become an expression of our national identity.
This also happens on a smaller level. Bostonians identify themselves with the Red Sox, and Tennessee is united by “Big Orange” and University of Tennessee football. Sports and athletics become a reflection of community, and we’re big fans of that.
Tell us what sports and events matter in your community. Is the local high school football rivalry big news? Does the college down the road host fierce basketball games that gain everyone’s attention? Do you think sports in your area represent your town, or is it just a game? Share your memories and stories in a comment, and remember you can also post your athletic moments in a milestone at xtra xtra!

Happy Presidents Day!
Here’s some trivia you may or may not know about this holiday…
*George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, and Abraham Lincoln was born on February 12, 1809. Today’s Presidents Day celebrates both of their births.
*The holiday was originally called “Washington’s Birthday,” and thus it was celebrated on February 22. The original federal holiday began in 1880, and it was the first to honor an American citizen.
*In 1951, the President’s Day National Committee attempted to create a day to honor the office of the presidency, rather than only Washington and Lincoln, but this failed.
*Our idea of Presidents Day emerged in the 1980s, though some states continue to recognize Washington’s Birthday as a separate holiday. Lincoln’s Birthday is also recognized independently in some states.
*George Washington is the only Founding Father who freed his slaves.
*At 133 words, Washington’s second inaugural address is the shortest that has ever been delivered.
*There are 33 counties, 7 mountains, and 9 colleges named after Washington.
*Abe Lincoln is the only US president ever to have obtained a patent.
*Lincoln earned an annual salary of $25,000 a year when he was in office. (If you’re interested, that’s 2.5 million pennies a year.)
*Lincoln’s appearance on the penny in 1909 marked the first time an American had been featured on a coin.
Enjoy the holiday, everyone!

Hon’s Story
Paul Rooney created xtra xtra, but he didn’t do it alone. The project was nurtured with the help of his mother, Peg Rooney, a lifelong resident of South Boston. An active volunteer and the mother of eleven sons, Peg keeps her kids connected to happenings in the neighborhood they once called home. When she explained to Paul that it was becoming hard to find and follow local milestones and achievements, xtra xtra was created as a solution for keeping people linked to communities they care about.
Peg, or “Hon,” as she’s known by many in her community, has wonderful stories to tell. She recently started a blog that details her life growing up in South Boston, what it was like to raise her sons and meet her husband, and other milestones that make life memorable. We invite you to take a look at some of the great posts she’s made thus far. She’ll be making new entries in the coming months, but until then, we hope you’ll help us recognize one of the inspirations for xtraxtra.com.

How-To: Receive Email Notifications
We know that you’re busy.
Recent statistics reveal that people use the internet for about 68 hours per month, and in that time, they visit over 2700 webpages. We polled some of our users last fall to see how they spend their time online, and we learned that they are masters of multitasking. They visit blogs, check email, peek at People.com, log into Facebook, watch YouTube videos, share pictures, visit their bank accounts, catch up with shows on Hulu, and read headlines at CNN.com.
See? Busy.
xtra xtra has tools that will bring the news to you. We’d love to have you visit the site to share milestones and photos, but for the days when you’re on the go, these tools can help you stay connected to milestones and events in your favorite towns.

The Anatomy of a Redesign
Much like many Hollywood celebrities, xtra xtra didn’t always look the way it looks now. We recently completed an extensive redesign process that was similar to an “everything must go” sale. We got a new logo and a sleeker color scheme. We created new icons and simplified the posting process. We ditched old features and picked up some fresh ones.
We decided to create a new look for the site in the summer of 2009. After collecting over 3,000 user comments from a BzzAgent.com marketing campaign, it was clear that we needed a clean, crisp layout that immediately let users know one thing: This is where you can read and share local milestones. Functionality and action were keys, and we needed someone to help us unlock the right doors.
That’s where Fresh Tilled Soil came in.
We worked with this design company to revamp the site. They focused on usability and functionality, and there was an emphasis on making the site sleek, simple, and familiar to even the newest user. The end result was certainly successful, as demonstrated by this photo gallery. Click the image below to view some of our before and after images.
Fresh Tilled Soil also wrote a blog entry detailing their experiences with the xtra xtra redesign. It’s a good read if you’re interested in how the world looks from a designer’s standpoint!

Learning: It’s a Milestone
xtra xtra is proud to support nonprofit organizations by offering them free advertising space on our site. There are countless organizations committed to causes closely connected to our milestone categories, so we’re happy to spread the word about these groups on our website. Today we’re focusing on our newest partner, Iridescent Learning.
Iridescent is based in Santa Monica, CA, and it was created with the unique focus of getting students excited about science, math, and engineering. This is an important cause as recent studies from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development find US students ranking poorly in math and science when compared to students from other nations. President Obama has allocated budget funds to shore up this deficiency, but for now, Iridescent Learning is working intimately with students, parents, and mentors to make science a rallying point for everyone in the community.
One of the Iridescent’s most interesting programs is “Engineers as Teachers.” Engineers and engineering students from the University of Southern California volunteer with Iridescent to learn basic tools for teaching physics and science lessons to school children. After rigorous training and lesson planning techniques, these volunteers enter the classroom to engage students with hands-on-lessons that show how fun and valuable science can be.
xtra xtra is a big supporter of student achievements and scholastic events. Users can create an academic milestone or submit photos to celebrate the first day of kindergarten, an upcoming school play or fundraiser, graduations, making the honor roll, or a cool science project.
We hope our friends and fans will check out these milestones in their favorite communities, and we also invite you to visit Iridescent’s website to learn how you can support their efforts to make science a passion for our students.
